How Hard Is VR Development? Insights from Justin P Barnett 🎮🕹ī¸

In the world of game development, Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a fascinating and challenging frontier. But how hard is it to develop VR games? Justin P Barnett, a seasoned VR developer, shares his insights in his video “How Hard Is VR Development?”.

Justin begins by acknowledging that VR game development can indeed be difficult, especially for those who are new to game development. However, he emphasizes that the learning curve can be significantly eased with the right approach.

He outlines two main approaches to learning VR development. The first is for artists – those who are more inclined towards 3D modeling, level designing, or have an artistic eye. The second approach is for developers – those who are more interested in programming, logic, mechanics, and functionality.

Regardless of the approach, Justin highlights two essential prerequisites for VR development:

  1. A VR Headset: Justin recommends the Meta Quest 2 for beginners due to its affordability, functionality, and popularity. It currently holds a 90% market share among VR headsets.
  2. A Game Engine: Familiarity with a game engine is crucial, regardless of whether you’re an artist or a developer. Justin personally recommends Unity due to its advanced support for VR development. However, Unreal Engine and Godot are also viable options.

For artists, Justin suggests using a framework that already includes the game’s functionality or a visual scripting language that allows easy connection of functionality. For developers, learning the coding language of the chosen game engine (C# for Unity, C++ for Unreal Engine) is crucial.

Justin’s video is a great starting point for anyone interested in VR development. He provides a clear and concise overview of the challenges and requirements of VR development, making it an invaluable resource for beginners.
